Come to the Dark Side. . .of the Moon (Star Wars meets Pink Floyd)

in Entertainment, Music

Forty-three years ago The Dark Side of the Moon was released by Pink Floyd on March 1, 1973.  Their eighth release went on to become one of the top ten best-selling albums of all time.  The classic rock LP has also earned fame as an alternate soundtrack to various movies, most notably The Wizard of Oz, for the way lyrics and music seem to magically sync with the action on screen.

Most recently The Dark Side of the Moon has ‘joined forces’ with the Dark Side of the Force.  According to a post on Reddit, the album – when started just after the story intro finishes crawling across the screen – lines up with the latest Star Wars installment, The Force Awakens.

Submitter knnl goes on to state several examples of the music matching the movie, including scenes where Poe is tortured/”I’m not afraid to die” lyric (even the song’s scream erupts just as Poe lets his own scream loose); Han Solo’s demise also earns similar song synchronization as the words “I never was afraid of dying” are sung.

During Ren’s reunion with Darth Vader’s helmet, the somber notes of The Great Big Gig in the Sky‘s piano accompany the imagery with similar sadness.

Even the epic final battle between heroine and villain seems to have an eerie entanglement with the band’s “Us And Them” track.  “Black and blue . . . who knows which is which and who is who” seem to mimic the struggle between good and evil, playing out to the clashing of light sabers.

Additional details and examples are spelled out on the Reddit post.

Apparently The Force Awakens is not the first time Pink Floyd has been paired with the Star Wars Universe – this You Tube video uses scenes from the pod race in The Phantom Menace:
