Preview: AquaLab add-on to the AquaDuck water coaster offers a splash-tacular time aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship

One of the most fun experiences on the Disney Dream cruise ship has been expanded aboard the new Disney Fantasy. The world’s first water-coaster-at-sea, the AquaDuck, debuted last year on the Disney Dream, featuring twists and turns above the high seas. But on the Fantasy, not only is Disney Cruise Line duplicating this high-sliding ride, but also adding the AquaLab, a drenching water play area that ties in to the AquaDuck fun.

As the attraction’s story goes, Huey, Dewey, and Louie built the AquaDuck for their amusement, but their uncle Donald Duck hopped on before it was ready, sending him soaring into one of the ship’s nearby smokestacks. On the Disney Fantasy, that story is taken a step further with the AquaLab serving as the workshop where the young trio created the AquaDuck. Of course, not all is perfect in a workshop, with leaky pipes and squirting water jets around every turn.

That video is the latest in a series of video diaries showing off some of the Disney Fantasy’s new features.

The 1,800-square-foot AquaLab water play area is located on Deck 12 of the Disney Fantasy and includes 24 pop jets and countless other geysers, bubblers, and other water features that are designed to douse all who enter, with around 900 gallons of water pumping through per minute.

One More Disney Day begins 24-hour day at Walt Disney World with fan excitement shining through dense morning fog

One More Disney Day begins 24-hour day at Walt Disney World with fan excitement shining through dense morning fog

Even a thick morning fog couldn’t subdue the Disney magic in the air as hundreds of fans showed up to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World long before the crack of dawn to mark the beginning of One More Disney Day. In honor of the extra date for Leap Year, Feb. 29, the park is open for a full day - 24 hours - concurrently with Disneyland Park in California, a first-time event for Disney Parks.

The Magic Kingdom celebrated the beginning of the extra long day with a performance of the daily opening welcome ceremony on the Main Street Train Station. Other than a brief mention of One More Disney Day by the mayor of Main Street USA, the ceremony was essentially the same that’s seen every morning at the park, though normally performed after the sun has risen.

But what made it special were the fans in attendance, each sporting special One More Disney Day Mickey Mouse ear hats and buttons, given out to passholders as they passed through the turnstiles. It wasn’t a shoulder-to-shoulder, densely-packed crowd, but certainly a large showing considering the welcome moment began just before 6 a.m.

Free “John Carter” screenings announced for Disney D23 members throughout the United States

Free “John Carter” screenings announced for Disney D23 members throughout the United States

In what’s likely an effort to spark positive word-of-mouth for Disney’s blockbuster film “John Carter,” D23 members in select cities across the United States are being offered a chance to see the movie for free at early preview screenings.

Screenings will take place the week of March 5, 2012, leading up to the March 9 full release of the film. Cities included in the screening offer are: Albany, Albuquerque, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Fresno, Ft. Lauderdale, Grand Rapids, Hartford, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City (KS), Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Louisville, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City, Norfolk, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Raleigh/Durham, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa, Washington DC, and West Palm Beach.

Free tickets for 3D screenings of “John Carter” will be made available on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 11 a.m. PST on this D23 web page. The limited number of tickets will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to D23 members in good standing plus one guest each, with valid photo ID and D23 membership card needed for entrance.

Having seen “John Carter” myself in a press screening a few days ago, I whole-heartedly encourage each and every D23 member to take advantage of this offer. While my full film review is embargoed until its countrywide release date on March 9, I will say that despite what you may think about the film from its messy marketing and less-than-stellar reactions from the clips shown at the 2011 D23 Expo, “John Carter” is a film worth seeing. (Check back on March 9 for my full thoughts on the movie.)

“John Carter” is based on the classic novel, “A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known for writing Tarzan. Though it’s tough to gather the plot from the trailers that Disney has released, the film tells the story of a Civil War-era captain John Carter who gets mysteriously transported to Mars and thrust into a battle to save the planet from domination.

Video: Inside the Matterhorn Bobsleds refurbishment, reopening June 15 at Disneyland

The iconic Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction at Disneyland in California has been closed for a few weeks as part of a 6-month long refurbishment project and today Disney has offered an inside look at what’s going on within the mountain’s snowy walls.

Take a peek inside the update via the new video below, released by Disney today.

Video: Behind the Wall: Matterhorn Bobsleds Refurbishment at Disneyland Park

The biggest change for the classic steel roller coaster is the addition of new individual seat ride vehicles with lap bars instead of seat belts. These new vehicles offer guests a chance to comfortably sit on their own, rather than in the lap of another passenger.

The Matterhorn is also receiving a new station for single riders and guests needing special assistance, as well as a general sprucing up on the inside and out, with new a paint job and lighting being added.

Most notably, the video states that the Matterhorn Bobsleds will reopen on June 15, 2012 - also the rumored (though not confirmed) date on which Cars Land will open at the Disney California Adventure theme park.

Disney Fantasy cruise ship arrives in New York after transatlantic voyage, ready for christening Thursday

Disney Fantasy cruise ship arrives in New York after transatlantic voyage, ready for christening Thursday

The newest Disney Cruise Line ship has completed her transatlantic voyage from the Meyer Werft construction yard, arriving this morning in New York. The Disney Fantasy will be christened there on Thursday, making a grand entrance today through New York Harbor, passing in front of the Statue of Liberty, leaving no doubt as to which city she’s arriving to the United States in.

Fans in New York normally watch Disney excitement unfold outside of their home town, staying connected to theme parks in California and Florida virtually. But today they had an opportunity to see Disney sights in person and eagerly shared pictures with us of the Disney Fantasy arriving to the port in New York.
