Actor Warwick Davis conducts Hogwarts Frog Choir at Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Actor Warwick Davis appeared at tonight’s private Wizarding World of Harry Potter opening ceremony, conducting the Hogwarts Frog Choir, just as his character Professor Filtwick did in the Harry Potter films.

While the event was not open to the public, it was made available for live online viewing, so here is that video of Davis and the Frog Choir:

Review: Disney’s “World of Color” dazzles viewers with a captivating experience across California Adventure’s night sky

Review: Disney’s “World of Color” dazzles viewers with a captivating experience across California Adventure’s night sky

After having brought you the “World of Color” premiere event live blog, celebrity arrivals, opening presentation featuring talking Mickey Mouse, video and audio of the full show itself, and an Imagineer interview, I’d like to round out our coverage of Disney’s new nighttime show with a review of the experience.

As I’ve repeated many times since standing through two showings of “World of Color,” there is just one word that can most-succinctly summarize what Disney’s new show is: wow – and a whole lot of it.

“World of Color” is a tough show to describe. How do you put into words a show that is all about sights, sounds, and feelings?

Some compare it to Disney’s Fantasmic, with both projecting animation sequences onto screens made of water. Some compare it to the water show at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, as both feature fountains “dancing” to music. But Disney has added that magical “wow” factor to “World of Color” that no other show I’ve seen includes.

SeaWorld’s Manta roller coaster still flying strong after a year

SeaWorld’s Manta roller coaster still flying strong after a year

Amidst the excitement of Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter opening and Disney’s return of the Main Street Electrical Parade and other Summer Nightastic fun, it’s easy to forget it was only a little more than a year ago that SeaWorld Orlando opened its world-class roller coaster and aquarium experience, Manta.

Before Manta, I found SeaWorld to be a solid theme park, worth a vacation day if there’s time after having already visited Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. But with the addition of Manta, SeaWorld instantly became a hit for thrill seekers visiting the area and I now recommend it as a must-visit for vacationers to Orlando.

Manta, as a whole, is more than just a roller coaster. While the “flying” coaster is the only of its kind of Florida, pushing major G-forces at the beginning and relaxing views at the end, the indoor aquarium queue is an attraction unto itself.

To celebrate Manta’s one-year anniversary (which was around 3 weeks ago on May 22), SeaWorld has released a video featuring “fun facts” about the attraction, delivered by one of its designers, Brian Morrow:

Back at the attraction’s opening, I spoke with several of Manta’s designers, including Morrow, to find out what was really behind the whole experience:

Universal prepares for giant crowds for Wizarding World of Harry Potter public grand opening – and you should too

Universal prepares for giant crowds for Wizarding World of Harry Potter public grand opening – and you should too

One of the few complaints commonly voiced by preview visitors to Universal Orlando’s new Wizarding World of Harry Potter surrounds the relatively small size of its streets, shops, and passageways. Unlike in the photo above, taken before the Wizarding World’s Hogsmeade Village began its previews, the area will soon be filled with fans eager to taste Butterbeer and ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey for the first time.

To prepare for the expected large crowd showing up for the much-publicized public grand opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on Friday, June 18, Universal announced this morning that it will open its park garage at 5:30 a.m. with the Islands of Adventure theme park opening at 9 a.m. The public grand opening festivities are scheduled to begin promptly at 9 a.m. that day, lasting around 30 minutes. So if your plans include a trip to see whatever excitement Universal has scheduled to grand open their most impressive entertainment offering to date, they should also include getting up early and waiting with thousands of other people.

While Hogwarts Castle seems huge, towering over this new section of Islands of Adventure, the neighboring Hogsmeade Village, home to an array of shops, dining, and entertainment, is rather cramped by theme park standards. Guests won’t find oversized store aisles or large push-open doors that swing out. To maintain its “authentic” feel, Hogsmeade Village appears to have been created as if it were a real village, keeping most of its indoor and outdoor proportions sized to the real world, rather than a standard theme park area, normally designed to comfortably hold thousands of people at once.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has had a number of “soft opening” phases, but it is expected that none have come anywhere close to the crowds that will be arriving for this weekend’s official grand opening. During a media presentation this morning at Universal Orlando, Universal Orlando president Bill Davis declined to comment on the actual number of guests the Wizarding World can hold. Instead, he offered that they do expect high attendance this weekend and that, in general, Universal feels that the Wizarding World will boost Orlando tourism – a pair of rather obvious facts.

As to the preparation for this coming weekend’s opening, Davis simply stated, “We’ve done this before. We’ll get through it.”

If you don’t want to brave the crowds and the early morning at Universal Orlando, you can still tune in online to watch the public grand opening via Universal’s live video stream.
