Spooky Empire to bring May-Hem back to Orlando with zombie walk tribute, celebrity guests from Terminator, Addams Family

Spooky Empire to bring May-Hem back to Orlando with zombie walk tribute, celebrity guests from Terminator, Addams Family

The boys and ghouls of Spooky Empire are back again beginning this Friday with another weekend of May-Hem on International Drive in Orlando. This year’s Halloween-away-from-Halloween event will include another exciting line-up of celebrity guests and special events.

It’s the second year Spooky Empire has expanded its annual October offering into May, with the aptly-titled May-Hem event evoking some of that same freaky fun a few months early.

This year’s celebrity line-up includes a pair of stars from the “Terminator” series, most notably Linda Hamilton, best known for her role as Sarah Connor in “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” and again in Universal Studios’ “T2:3D” attraction.

In addition, Kristanna Loken - the female “Terminatrix” from “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” will be there.

For old school horror fans, several cast members of the original Addams Family will be in attendance, including John Astin (Gomez) and Lisa Loring (Wednesday).

Inside Disney’s new Carbon-Freeze Me experience, immersing guests in a Star Wars world to create a custom collectible

Inside Disney’s new Carbon-Freeze Me experience, immersing guests in a Star Wars world to create a custom collectible

After being caught spying on Darth Vader’s latest Death Star plans, I was sentenced to eternal imprisonment frozen in carbonite. Maybe it didn’t go quite like that, but I did indeed step into a carbon freezing chamber at Walt Disney World, voluntarily, as part of the newest line of custom collectibles offered during Star Wars Weekends 2012, which began yesterday.

Disney calls the experience “Carbon Freeze Me,” enabling theme park guests to have their faces scanned and 3D-printed onto a small collectible figurine featuring their likeness sculpted onto Han Solo’s body, frozen in carbonite, a la “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.”

With the aid of my pal Kenny the Pirate, I recorded my trip into the Carbon Freeze Me experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, seen in the video below, including the variety of amusing faces I made while trying to act like I’d just been doomed by the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Video: Carbon Freeze Me experience at Star Wars Weekends 2012

For the duration of Star Wars Weekends, which takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through June 10, Carbon Freeze Me is setup inside the ABC Sound Studio, formerly home to Drew Carey’s “Sounds Dangerous” attraction. But for this new experience, Disney has decked out the stage to resemble the famous carbon freezing chamber from the second (or fifth?) “Star Wars” film.

Complete with dramatic shades of orange, blue, and red, winding ducts overhead, and plenty of fog, the ominous setup certainly sets the mood for being turned into Jabba’s next wall decoration. And Disney’s Cast Members were playing the part too, frequently referring to me as a “rebel spy” and asking what I “did” to receive my sentence.

In the end, the product that’s being created from Carbon Freeze Me is an 8-inch tall, highly-detailed Star Wars figurine, featuring Han Solo’s famous pose but with the 3D face of whoever takes part in the experience.

The actual “carbon freezing chamber” is a comfortable seat situated between a blue screen, several bright lights, and a small LCD monitor. After brief instruction and requiring me to pull my long hair back away from my face, a robotic voice counts down from 3 before my first 3D photo is snapped. Instead of smiling for the camera and saying “Cheeeeeeese,” the proper expression here is to wince in pain as the voice exclaims, “Freeeeeeeeeze.” Clever.

Carbon Freeze Me at Star Wars Weekends

Before me, I watched one adult and several children step into the “chamber” and get their likenesses captured. Guests of all ages seemed to be enjoying it, particularly due to Disney’s attention to detail in making it more than a simple photo opportunity. The ambiance, props, sound effects, and Cast Member dedication to the story all combined to create a proper Star Wars experience.

I was given three chances at making various faces before stepping around to a nearby computer monitor to see the results. I chose my third face, as it looked like I was in the most pain and my clenched teeth made the photo different enough from how Harrison Ford posed, mouth open, as Han Solo. I had to make it my own.

After choosing that photo, the Cast Member clicked a few buttons and my 2D image was suddenly turned into a 3D computer model, fully colored and textured, able to be manipulated on-screen. It was rather creepy.

Another mouse click replaced all the color in my face with shades of grey, showing me roughly how I’d appear when frozen in a small carbonite figurine.

The 3D-scanned image will act as a base for the final figurine, the design for which will be touched up before being created.

The final step, naturally, was to pay for the experience and my figurine, which was not available in the park but rather would be shipped to my house in 3-4 weeks. The price tag is $99, though the total actually comes out to around $122 once sales tax and shipping are factored in. The extra costs offer a bit of sticker shock for those expecting $100 a head - literally. But ultimately the price not only pays for the figurine itself, nicely packaged inside an official Star Wars box, but also the fun theme park experience, which is only open to those who buy into it and their friends and family who join them to watch.

I didn’t leave totally empty handed, given a “tracking wristband” so the Empire could keep tabs on me, since they were unable to truly imprison me in carbonite.

At the touch of a button, the wristband’s face cycles between red, blue, and green colors.

So is it all really worth $122? I can’t say that until my figurine arrives in a few weeks. So check back then for my final thoughts on this experience. If it’s successful, and it seems to be, I have a feeling Disney will find ways to extend it past the end of Star Wars Weekends, perhaps rolling it out when Star Wars Celebration VI arrives to the Orange County Convention Center in August.

Reservations are required for Carbon Freeze Me, though walk-ups were being accepted late in the day yesterday. The experience can be reserved by calling Disney at 407-WDW-TECH (407-939-8324).

Time-Lapse: Matterhorn Mountain receives 6-month realistic repainting, Bobsleds ride reopens in June at Disneyland

Time-Lapse: Matterhorn Mountain receives 6-month realistic repainting, Bobsleds ride reopens in June at Disneyland

When Disneyland temporarily closed the classic Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction in January 2012, the goal was not only to swap out the bobsleds, adding individual seats and lap bars, but also make improvements to the Matterhorn Mountain itself.

When it reopens roughly 6 months after its refurbishment began, the Matterhorn Mountain will feature an all-new summit-to-base paint job, more accurately representing how the peaks of the real Matterhorn look in Switzerland today. Throughout the entire repainting, Disneyland took a series of photos as scaffolding was erected and recently taken down, now edited together in a time-lapse video condensing the entire update down to 44 seconds.

Time-Lapse Video: 6 months of Matterhorn Mountain repainting

Here are before and after shots, just as the scaffolding was going up and just after it came down:

The snow has not only been refreshed with a new coat of white paint, but also rearranged a bit with less near the top of the mountain and more scattered throughout its faces. The real Matterhorn mountain, after all, has very little snow near its peak:

In addition to the bobsled swap and snow repainting, the refurbishment also includes the addition of a new station for single riders and guests needing special assistance as well as general touchups throughout the interior portion of the roller coaster ride.

The Matterhorn Bobsleds will reopen at Disneyland June 14, 2012.

Disneyland gives monorails a ‘Cars’ facelift, adding eyes, a mouth, and a voice in promotion of Cars Land opening

Disneyland gives monorails a ‘Cars’ facelift, adding eyes, a mouth, and a voice in promotion of Cars Land opening

Mandy, Mona, and Manny are the names Disneyland Resort has given three of its monorails, now featuring faces in the style of Disney/Pixar’s film “Cars” in promotion of the upcoming grand opening of Cars Land on June 15.

Monorails Blue, Orange, and Red have been given eyes and mouths, transforming them into three new characters, making their way around the beam that spans Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Downtown Disney. Blue (Mandy) and Orange (Mona) are currently out while Red (Manny) is coming soon.

(Photos from the Disney Parks Blog)

Disneyland does have a history of “wrapping” their monorails in promotion of new attractions, having re-themed a monorail as a yellow submarine when the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage opened nearly five years ago. In Orlando, Walt Disney World more recently promoted “Tron: Legacy” with the “Tronorail” and “Marvel’s The Avengers” with the “Avengerail.”

But these new “Cars”-themed monorails are more than just wraps, but entirely new characters, voices of which are heard while riding on them as “Manny, Mandy and Mona Monorails are taking charge of the overhead announcements themselves.”

YouTube user magnapurpleboy has already uploaded this video featuring Mandy Monorail’s friendly voice:

The new narration is fairly standard for Disneyland Resort, but with a personalized twist featuring lines such as “My name is Mandy Monorail. For your safety, remain seated with hands, arms, feet, and legs inside my cabin” and “Along the way, we’ll catch a monorail’s-eye view of the Downtown Disney District, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, and Disney California Adventure, soon to be home of Cars Land and my favorite four-wheeled friends,” ending with “Thanks for traveling with me. Your company had me gliding happily down the track. Have a magical stay here at Disneyland!” And yes, Mandy and the other monorails do speak Spanish too.

Meanwhile an anonymous Disney fan has already set up mock Twitter accounts, giving each of the three character monorails their own unique, often funny, but not always family-friendly personalities at @MandyMonorail, @MonaMonorail, and @MannyMonorail. I stress that these accounts are unofficial and not created, endorsed, or monitored by Disney.

The new monorail designs are sure to do wonders for keeping “Cars” on the minds of everyone who visits the Disneyland Resort in the coming months, though there’s no word as to how long the eyes, mouths, and voices will remain on this classic mode of theme park transportation.
