VIDEO: “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” creates a stunningly nightmarish audio experience using binaural audio

Have you ever started to play a video game and seen a message that suggest you play with headphones on? Do you typically ignore that message like I do? If so, you’re going to want to change that habit when you play “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.”

This new game from Ninja Theory uses binaural audio to create a chilling audio experience for the gamer. Senua, the game’s titular protagonist, suffers from psychosis which causes her to hear voices throughout her adventure.

Those voices not only create a nightmarish experience for the player, but also serve as a navigational tool. While I would not recommend following the voices in your head in real life, it is a key part of this game. At one point, you will even have to rely on the voices to navigate a near pitch black level.

Ninja Theory released a development diary that spotlights the incredible 3D sound at work in the “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.” I highly recommend you put on headphones before checking out the video.

WATCH – A DEMO OF THE BINAURAL SOUND IN “HELLBLADE: SENUA’S SACRIFICE”:

Disney fans will be familiar with binaural audio, as they have likely encountered it in attractions like ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter or a brief stint in Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. This game will provide a very different experience from listening to an animatronic President however.

“Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” is available now for Playstation 4 and on Steam. For more information, visit the game’s official website!
