Before Mickey Mouse, there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Created by Walt Disney in the late 1920s, Oswald starred in 26 cartoons under Disney’s direction until Universal Studios took direct creative control of the character and Walt moved on to even bigger things. Several years ago, however, the rights to the Oswald character were reclaimed by The Walt Disney Company in a trade with Universal, and Oswald was introduced into the Disney theme parks for the very first time.

Now Disney is preparing to release a restored version of the very first Oswald cartoon, “Poor Papa” (1927), which was not included on the 2007 “The Adventures of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” edition of the Walt Disney Treasures DVD collection. The short will make its home video debut on the upcoming Walt Disney Signature Collection “Pinocchio” Blu-ray and DVD set.

According to the exclusive story at D23, the restoration was performed by Lowry Digital, an organization that has previously been responsible for the excellent recent restoration jobs done on many of the classic Disney titles.

The Walt Disney Signature Collection “Pinocchio” physical media release will be available starting Tuesday, January 31st at all major retailers. This reissue also marks the first time “Pinocchio” will be available on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere, beginning tomorrow, January 10th.
