Beginning today, the official Universal Orlando Resort app will enable guests to purchase and redeem tickets from their phones. Paper tickets and Will Call lines are no longer necessary evils when it comes to “theme parking.” Tickets purchased through the app will provide a QR Code to be scanned for entry at the turnstiles.

There are a few caveats with the app. The first is that these types of tickets are not available with the Florida Resident discount just yet. That is expected to be rolled out later this year. Additionally, Annual Passholders can’t whip out their phones for scanning either. If you need a regularly priced ticket, though, you are good to go.

Another important thing to note is that the only tickets that can be “summoned” via mobile device are the ones purchased with a mobile device. So you can’t buy them online through Universal’s site and then find them in your app. Also, that QR Code can only be brought up on the phone that purchased the tickets in the first place. This means don’t use your friend’s phone to buy the tickets if that friend’s phone isn’t visiting the theme park with you. Your ticket will not show up on your app if it was purchased through someone else’s.

The good news is that tickets for multiple guests can be purchased through one app transaction. The single QR Code can be scanned and used for the whole party’s entry. And a PDF email confirmation will still be sent for printing and/or forwarding to others if that is deemed a more convenient option.

Universal is actively answering questions on Twitter with the hashtag #AskUniversal. Guests who feel they need more information can post their inquiries there.
