VIDEOS: Knott’s Berry Farm brings its world-famous Ghost Town “Alive” for 75th anniversary celebration

75 years ago this summer, Walter Knott opened his Ghost Town attraction to guests at the location of his berry farm in Buena Park, California. Not long after that, the Ghost Town began to expand, adding a railroad and other rides, eventually evolving into the internationally-famous Knott’s Berry Farm, sometimes referred to as the world’s first theme park.

This year, Knott’s Berry Farm is celebrating its three-quarter-century birthday by launching Ghost Town Alive!, a unique and incredibly fun interactive experience in the newly-refurbished Ghost Town area of the park.

Last month also saw the reopening of GhostRider, Knott’s giant wooden roller coaster (originally opened in 1998,) which underwent a complete refurbishment and re-profiling this winter, resulting in a far smoother ride.

Ghost Town Alive! allows guests to take part in a day-long story set in the heavily-fictionalized town of Calico (based on the real California Ghost Town of the same name,) where a family of outlaws has rode into town to unleash havoc on an unsuspecting community of prospectors and other businesspeople.

Visitors can chat with each town citizen, discover their roles in the town and how they would have functioned in the real Old West, and engage in a narrative that culminates in a classic Western showdown.

I found Ghost Town Alive! to be a very intriguing  and well-executed idea, although it would probably take two or three visits to Knott’s this summer to truly get the full experience. It also helps to be in the right place at the right time, as in-story events happen on a schedule and in predetermined locations.

Once you get the hang of it, however, Ghost Town Alive! starts to feel like a genuinely immersive and appealing interactive theater event, all set within one of the best theme parks in Southern California.
