Bill the vampire on Playbill? “True Blood” heads to Broadway with new musical

Hoping to achieve what Anne Rice’s Lestat didn’t (despite an Elton John score, it bombed in less than 40 shows). HBO hopes to successfully make the transformation from behind the camera to in front of the curtain as a new True Blood theater production. Nathan Barr, composer for the seven season series is assisting in adapting the popular vampire series into a Broadway musical.

True Blood is based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries series of books (also known as the Sookie Stackhouse series) written by Charlaine Harris. The first title in the series, Dead Until Dark, won the Anthony Award for best paperback in 2001. Harris’ 13th and final Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead Ever After, was released in 2013.

HBO tapped Alan Ball to adapt and run the novels into weekly show in 2008. The series was well received and True Blood ran for seven seasons with a total of 80 episodes.

True Blood faces impossible odds in terms of similar shows. Despite being creatures of the night, vampires have not done well in Broadway. The list of shows that have been staked through the heart include the aforementioned Lestat (2006 – 39 performances), Dance of the Vampires (2002 56 performances) and Dracula the Musical (2004 – 157 performances).

The score and book are reportedly completed for True Blood and the script is being edited. Bon Temps, the land of vampires, fairies and witches is presumed to be ready to come out of the coffin in 2018.
