Great Scott! The DeLorean time machine from the massively-popular 1985 Universal movie “Back to the Future” is undoubtedly one of the most famous and recognizable cars in movie history.
For many years the movie-used “A” car (the actual 1981 DeLorean that rolls out of the back of Doc Brown’s truck at the beginning of the first movie) was on display in the hot Southern California sun outside Back to the Future: The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. Then it was finally restored and relocated to a display in the Lower Lot area of the park, a process that will be detailed in the upcoming documentary “Outatime.”
Now Universal Hollywood is continuing its ongoing expansion, and the DeLorean is getting a new home. The car was moved from the park to the Petersen Automotive Museum in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles, where its unveiling took place this week.

While it’s a shame that Universal could not commit to giving the “A” car a permanent home, it’s nice to see it end up at the Petersen, where fans know it will be cared for and available for viewing.
The DeLorean will makes it public debut this Friday, April 22nd at the museum, and the Petersen will host its own “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance on Saturday in celebration of the new exhibit, complete with “Back to the Future” tribute band The Flux Capacitors.
