It’s not your grandma’s dragon, that’s for sure. Entertainment Weekly has revealed an exclusive first look at the all-new, completely reimagined Elliot from the remake of Pete’s Dragon. Pretty different than this guy: petes-dragon-pete-elliott-apples Fur! Crazy right? It’s been 40 years since the original film, and this remake is looking to travel in similar footsteps, while pretty much reinventing everything else. For those who don’t know, the story centers around an orphan named Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his best friend, a humongous, occasionally visible dragon named Elliott. This particular take (at least from the previews) seems like it’s leaning on a darker take of the classic family tale.

“Certain things about the original design we loved: Big jaw, big snout, and a clumsy quality that we really wanted to not completely forget about,” says director t. “We explored pink, just to see what would happen. From the get-go, the aesthetic was always to make everything feel as handmade as possible, including effects. To really have it feel like a blur between a very grounded realistic world and a world in which a big green dragon that can turn invisible can exist.”
