Way back in 1941, more than a decade before Walt Disney began to scout for Disneyland’s eventual Anaheim location, berry farmer Walter Knott opened his Buena Park-based Ghost Town attraction in the lot next to his wife’s locally famous chicken restaurant. Located just a few miles north of Disneyland, the Ghost Town is still in operation, although now heavily expanded and long since renamed Knott’s Berry Farm, the 13th most visited theme park in North America.

This summer Knott’s will be celebrating the Ghost Town’s 75th anniversary by launching “Ghost Town Alive!” — a unique interactive experience unlike anything the park has offered before. This past week we were able to attend a media preview of the event, and participated in tours of the reconstruction and refurbishment of many of Ghost Town’s most popular features, including the huge Ghost Rider wooden roller coaster and the Calico Saloon, home to one of the park’s most enduring live shows. It’s safe to say Knott’s is undergoing some major changes this year, and it’s very exciting to see how the park is funneling a lot of the money made during its incredibly popular “Scary Farm” Halloween Haunt event into improving existing areas during the off-season.

We’ll definitely be keeping up with the progress of Knott’s evolution as the year goes on, so stay tuned for updates from the park’s upcoming Boysenberry Festival, as well as in-depth coverage of “Ghost Town Alive!” when it debuts in May.
