Solar farm Hidden Mickey appears near Walt Disney World Resort

in Disney, Epcot, Technology, Theme Parks, Walt Disney World

You think they can see this thing from space?

Back in the merry month of May, Duke Energy and Disney agreed to a land lease deal for a fancy new solar energy facility near Epcot. The facility itself covers 20 acres, and the 48,000 solar panels involved now lovingly take the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head.

Construction for the facility began back in October, and now Blog Mickey has given us our first look at the world’s largest “Hidden Mickey.” Check it out!

What do you think of the new structure? Let us know in the comments!

I think it’s a great idea. I also think that with the money they save by producing their own electricity they SHOULD PASS ON BIG SAVINGS TO THEIR FAITHFUL FLORIDA RESIDENTS. WE USED TO HAVE ANNUAL PASSES BUT SINCE THE PRICES WERE RAISED, WE COULDNT AFFORD TO RENEW OUR PASSES. THINKING ABOUT GOING TO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS. DO THE RIGHT THING DISNEY.

      Luxury is expensive, idiot.

I bet you support Donald Trump too.

That solar site had to cost them 20 million+ there is no cost savings in solar, just displacing the cost. Maybe in 20 years it will start saving them something, but be sure that it will not be past on to anyone. They’re in the business of making money, and they do it well

First, where did you get your $20+ million? Second, if “They’re in the business of making money, and they do it well”, don’t you think they would have gone with the option that would most financially beneficial?

Is this bigger than the hidden grove of trees northwest of the MK?

Great website by the way 🙂

It would be nice to see the savings for all. The guest who have to travel from far away deserve just as much of a savings as the “faithful Florida resident”. We travel every year, sometime twice, with five children. Maybe not on admission but some of the savings would be Nicely spent on the resorts for the faithful Disney fan no matter where they are visiting from.

We saw the field, leaving the Magic Kingdom. We both commented that it made a lot of sense, since Walt Disney World is in the Sunshine State. It is pretty cool that it is shaped as a Mickey Head. It is like the electric poles out on I4.

I think the idea is great but other then cutting all those trees in that area they would have use any parking lot area and install the solar panels to those already open areas.

I’m not quite certain it’s the largest hidden mickey. Did you know that the entire front part of Disney’s hollywood studios (MGM) was built to be a giant hidden mickey. The sorcerer’s hat actually destroyed this hidden mickey for a long time but now that it is gone the hidden mickey is back. http://41.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lmizakat3Y1qzbdgko1_1280.jpg

Yes, known that for years. I think this solar farm is larger.

Do we know where this is located exactly?
And this is a great start, but we are going to need many, many more of them to make a difference.

Jenna – you can see the location on nearmap’s website here https://t.co/HBI8EQTZ2X

Makes me want to puke. Hidden Mickey’s are a symbol of oppression to thousands of cast members who live in poverty because they do not earn a livable wage and there are no other jobs available in the area.

      Bella,
I am often confused by people like you who leave negative comments on what is CLEARLY a WDW fan site. If you have such disdain for Disney, then WHY are you looking at a site like this to begin with?! It’s a head scratcher to me.

    2. Doxiedad

Bella, Disney is not the only employer in the Central Florida area. They do not have pressing gangs that go out and force people to work there.
      Grow up.

This is a great idea and something that the Imagineers at Disney would come up with. Although wouldn’t it been better to locate it near the new Avatar section in Animal Kingdom to expand on the “Saving Nature” theme?
What will be the output of the Solar Field when completed?

    1. creatingmagic

Nah, near Epcot is perfect. Universe of Energy anyone?

  11. Disney is doing their part to save the air we breath. It is not always about the money. Saving our planet is bigger than any dollar amount….solar is “priceless”….versus killing the planet and the future of existence !!

    1. Typo on my last comment this is the correct one.

  12. Wow! This is pretty creative for a solar farm. The mickey shape is just beautiful in its aerial view. Plus the fact that they are investing with this energy is a great news.
