“Fast and Furious” franchise sets release dates for Fast 9 and Fast 10

Fans of Vin Diesel and “The Fast and the Furious” franchise have had a lot of good news in the past year. Not only did “Furious 7” make over a billion dollars, but the franchise picked up “Straight Outta Compton” director F. Gary Gray for its next installment. Fans of the films that live near Universal Orlando are also excited with news of the upcoming attraction based on the franchise. Perhaps the best news for the future of the franchise is Vin Diesel’s continued presence, and he engaged fans of his social media to announced the release dates of two more features.

Fast and Furious Vin Diesel date announcement

Using his Instagram, Diesel announced release dates for the next three installments. “Fast 8” was previously announced to release on April 14th, 2017. “Fast 9” is scheduled for an April 19th, 2019 release date, and “Fast 10” is scheduled to release April 2, 2021. This continues the trend started by “Fast & Furious” (Fast 4) of releasing the films in the month of April. This strategy has worked out well for the films, giving them relatively little competition until the unofficial start of the blockbuster season in May. For example, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” is not set to release until May 5th, 2017, giving the “Fast 8” almost three weeks to horde the box office to itself.

Fast and Furious Hobbs

This is an interesting announcement for another reason, namely because it does not account for the potential spinoffs that Diesel hinted at a few months ago. If a shared universe is in the works, they could easily fill in for the gap years between the “main chapters” of the storyline. While I am still hopeful for a Hobbs spinoff, Dwayne Johnson is unlikely to have time to shoot the film (between “Baywatch”, “”Jungle Cruise” and the continued HBO series “Ballers”). It’ll be interesting to see if the spinoffs are still in the cards, or if it was a passing phase.

Kurt Russell Furious Seven

As a fan of the Fast and Furious series, it is definitely exciting to see the new dates announced. Knowing that we’ll be getting another Fast film every other year just makes sense, especially considering the fact that “Furious 7” is the 6th highest grossing movie of all time, even after being knocked down by both “Jurassic World” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” With Kurt Russell’s addition, and the news that Eva Mendes is returning, I’m sure there are plenty of stories left to tell in the franchise. Plus, Jason Statham will always make an action franchise better.

“Fast 8” is set to release on April 14, 2017. It will be directed by F. Gary Gray, and stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, and Jason Statham.

“Fast 9” is set to release on April 19, 2019, and “Fast 10” is set to release on April 2nd, 2021.
