This past Sunday, January 10th was a bittersweet day at Disneyland, as the park shut down many attractions temporarily for refurbishment and several others permanently to make room for the new Star Wars expansion breaking ground very soon.

Among the areas that will see the most drastic changes is Big Thunder Ranch, located between Frontierland and Fantasyland east of the Rivers of America. The location played home to a petting zoo and a barbecue restaurant for many years, and will soon begin its transformation to a locale from a galaxy far, far away.

We paid a visit to Big Thunder Ranch for its final day of operation to get one last look around.

One other Big Thunder Ranch tradition that will be sorely missed is the “Running of the Goats”– a daily ceremony that corralled the petting zoo livestock back into their pens for the day. A huge crowd gathered on Sunday to bear witness to the final iteration.

Big Thunder Ranch will indeed be missed, but we’re certain that many great adventures lie ahead for the area and for Disneyland as a whole.
