Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened today in China, with an estimated $32.1 million, according to ChinaBoxOffice. This is the third-highest single-day gross in Chinese history, behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($33 million) and Furious 7 opening day total of $68 million. Variety is reporting that the film earned a record-breaking $53 million for the weekend.

“With this kind of start and the response we are receiving from those who’ve seen it, we’re very encouraged by the beginning of what should be a very long run and what it represents for the long-term future of the franchise in one of the most important markets in the world,” Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis told Variety, adding that for many Chinese fans, The Force Awakens will serve as their introduction to the Star Wars franchise.

Furious 7 was China’s #1 grossing film last year, pulling in $390.9 million. Age of Ultron finished with 240.1 million from China, being a large portion of the total oversees amount, $946 million. With numbers like those, the force will most likely be very strong with Star Wars: The Force Awakens final numbers in China.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens already had $821.3 million in international gross as of Friday, before even opening in China. But with the final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens having a special release, where it was projected on the Great Wall with First Order stormtroopers lining the monument, the film will no doubt win over even more audiences oversees. The film has now earned $1.73 billion globally after yet another strong weekend.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds over 30 box office records, including the highest domestic gross in history since opening day.
