Disney has announced that the release date for the next installment of the new Star Wars trilogy has been pushed back from its original May 26, 2017 date to December 15, 2017.

In its place, “””Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will be released instead on May 26 from its previously scheduled July 7 date.

No reason was given for the delay of “Star Wars: Episode VIII” but the original release date looked increasingly unlikely just 16 months away. The film, written and directed by Rian Johnson, is currently in pre-production with principal photography set to begin next month in London. Scenes with Mark Hamill at the home where Luke Skywalker lives, briefly seen in “The Force Awakens”, have already been shot.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is currently in post-production and is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow with Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, and new villain, Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.
