Marvel may have 67 characters planned to appear in “Avengers: Infinity War” series

After directing “Captain America: Winter Soldier” the Russo Brothers quickly became a hot commodity in the world of live action blockbusters. Wisely, Marvel locked up the brothers to direct “Captain America: Civil War” and not long after, were revealed to direct both parts of the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War.” The brothers have been rather present for the press.

During a recent event at Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con, the directors may have slipped on how many characters are looking to be in the upcoming films. When Anthony mistakenly referred to Peggy Carter as her granddaugter, Sharon Carter, his brother Joe jumped in with a rationale for his confusion.

“We have so many characters we’re dealing with. We’re breaking ground on “Avengers: Infinity War.” We have a board with 67 characters on it. You have to forgive him.”

This news was surprising for many reasons. First of all, that number is mind-boggling. It seems like the number could easily include side characters, such as Martin Freeman’s still unknown character, John C. Reilly’s Rhomann Dey. Still that number is very high. Below we’re going to do a little bit of math.

First of all, from the core Avenger’s films, there should be about 12 heroes present (Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Falcon and War Machine). Ant-Man, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Sharon Carter, Doctor Strange, Spider-man, and Guardians of the Galaxy pump that number up to 23. At least one more Guardian will show up, plus the impending films for Carol Danver’s Ms. Marvel, the Wasp, and potential 6 person “Inhumans” team places the total around 32. There are more to mention, but this does a lot to put it into perspective.

Granted some villains will show up for sure. Obviously Thanos will bring friends, likely including Nebula, Baron Zemo, and other characters from the MCU. I wouldn’t put it past Thanos to raise characters from the dead, including the possibility of Ronan or Malekith. He could also bring his Black Order, a.k.a. the Cull Obsidian (think Ring Wraiths), into the battle. That does not factor in the potential allegiance of Loki, who clearly aligned himself with Thanos for the first Avengers film, only to be captured and brought to Asgard. Would Loki side with the Avengers for self-preservation, or would he betray them if a “better offer” was on the table from Thanos?

Unfortunately, as exciting as it will surely be to see so many amazing characters take the screen, it also raises the question of overcrowding the films. While it’s believed that this number is meant to represent both films, the Russos have stated that they will be breaking the film into two separate films that are “related” but are not meant to be back-to-back features (a la “Back to the Future 2 and 3). If that’s the case, then even more characters could be in store for a 2nd film. Regardless, this number is as concerning as it is exciting, making it a positive and negative for the films moving forward.

“Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” is set to release on May 4th, 2018. “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” is set to release on May 3rd, 2019. Both will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. As of now, no cast has been officially confirmed.
