Disney is said to be working on a new project based on the popular “Tower of Terror” ride.

The story’s premise, according to Deadline, revolves around five people inside an elevator at the Hollywood Tower Hotel from a treatment by John August and producer Jim Whitaker.

The theme park ride combines footage and narration by what sounds like the late Rod Serling doing a Twilight Zone episode, with a jaw-dropping elevator car that falls precipitously, and climbs back up. That classic anthology show isn’t part of this; indeed, it’s being developed as a freestanding movie at Warner Bros, produced by Appian Way with Joseph Kosinski. This will be a haunted house picture, and having a family brand tied to it might help it fare better than an original creation like Crimson Peak.

At the moment, the filmmakers are looking for a screenwriter so it’s still in the early planning stages.

“Tower of Terror” rides are located at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney Studios Park in Disneyland Paris, Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, and Tokyo Disneysea.

Deadline notes that “Tower of Terror” was the first theme park ride to be adapted into a movie. This version was made for television back in 1997 and starred Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst.
