Custom Stormtrooper figure arrives from Walt Disney World, a stellar 3D printed Star Wars Weekends collectible

Just five weeks after joining the ranks of the Empire during Star Wars Weekends 2013, Walt Disney World has delivered the latest addition to the D-Tech Me personalized collectible line: a custom Stormtrooper figure.

Accurately featuring my not-so-menacing expression, this 3D printed sculpture sports a spot-on likeness of my face and head. And unlike the excellent Carbon Freeze Me figure I received from last year’s event, the Stormtrooper is in color, bearing an even more striking resemblance to yours truly.

Arriving earlier than the promised 6-8 weeks, Disney’s custom Stormtrooper figure was shipped securely in a large, heavily padded box featuring the Star Wars and D-Tech Me logos as well as a description of the product.

Inside, pulling my customized figure out of the plastic bag it was wrapped it revealed a flawless reproduction of the 3D scan of my face Disney took last month. I had chosen the Han Solo hair style, which was a bit of a shock at first, as it’s definitely a change from the long hair I’ve had since high school. But once I got past seeing myself with short(er) hair, I realized this figure was a dead-on match.

Details in the rest of the Stormtrooper outfit are excellent, including the iconic helmet and gun held by its side.

The figure stands roughly 7.5″ tall, including the built-in base. Like the Carbon Freeze Me item, this figure feels slightly gritty to the touch, a result of the layer-by-layer 3D printing process used to create it. It’s definitely fragile and meant to be displayed, not for playing with.

It cost around $120 to create, including tax and shipping, a price well worth this one-of-a-kind Star Wars figure.

The custom Stormtrooper and Carbon Freeze Me experiences are not currently available, offered only during Star Wars Weekends this year. There are no known plans to bring them to the D23 Expo in August, but they are likely to return when the special Star Wars event rolls around again in 2014.

Here’s a look back at the creation and arrival of my Carbon Freeze Me figure last year…
