Universal Studios Hollywood today officially announced Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem will be opening there in 2014. The attraction has already been a success since making its debut at Universal Orlando in June 2012, followed by a star-studded grand opening in July.

The 3D motion simulator ride features returning voice talents from the popular “Despicable Me” film, including Steve Carrell reprising his role as Gru, recruiting theme park guests to become his Minions. But, like the film, the attraction has some heart, not only following Gru’s sinister scheme but also the family bonds with Gru’s adopted daughters Edith, Agnes, and Margo.

Universal Studios Hollywood says the attraction will be modeled after the one in its sister park, Universal Orlando, with the addition of “a few surprises.”

Update (6/11/13): It appears the “surprises” are that Universal Studios Hollywood is building Super Silly Fun Land as part of their Despicable Me attraction, taking over the former Coca-Cola play area. Super Silly Fun Land is an amusement park within the “Despicable Me” film, unlikely to be recreated at full size in real life, but certainly featuring plenty of crazy play areas based on the movie.

The exterior of the attraction will feature “even more thematic and colorful creative touches that will literally place park guests inside Gru’s world,” said Mark Woodbury, President, Universal Creative. Like in Orlando, guests visit Gru’s house, making their way into his living room, super-villain laboratory, and ultimately end up on a Minion training mission. A post-show will feature a Minion-inspired dance party, all seen in the video below from Orlando.

Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem is replacing Terminator 2: 3-D, which closed at Universal Studios Hollywood at the end of 2012. Both attractions are currently open at Universal Studios Florida.
