Golden Horseshoe Revue returns to Disneyland in salute to classic Frontierland show for Limited Time Magic

The first big offering at Disneyland for 2013’s Limited Time Magic promotion is the return of the classic Frontierland stage show, the Golden Horseshoe Revue. The roughly 20-minute salute features the same style of entertainment of the original, which first debuted in the park on opening day, July 17, 1955, famously starring Wally Boag and a talented cast

Performed six times a day Thursday through Monday, including special annual passholder dinner shows, through February 4, the Golden Horseshoe Revue salute combines live music with rousing stage antics that carry out into the audience to add some nostalgia to the theme park.

For those who can’t make it to Disneyland during this limited time engagement, here’s a video of the full debut performance of the Golden Horseshoe Revue salute, followed by a photo summary of the day’s events:

The show debuted today at 11:30am to a crowd of excited fans, lined up early to snag the best seats and relive days of Disneyland’s past.

Tickets are distributed daily, first come, first served from the podium in front of the Golden Horseshoe Saloon in a similar fashion as they were years ago.

On the back is a limited time menu for the salute.

Guests may seat themselves anywhere on either floor of the Golden Horseshoe Saloon, also first come, first served. Today’s first show still had some seats available with minutes until showtime.

The band plays from a “pit” between the stage and the audience, featuring a piano, drums, banjo, and other instruments.

The Golden Cristo Nuggets are great, crispy and filling but not too much. The contrast of the french fries is a perfect combination of sweet and salty.

A sweet Fanta orange drink adds a can can dancer cookie on top and tastes like a creamsicle.

The show is an abridged version of the original Golden Horseshoe Revue, mainly featuring songs but also a bit of comedy. It’s essentially the beginning and end of the original, minus Wally Boag’s comedy bit – sadly missing from this tribute.

Miss Lilly hosts a large portion of the show, noting its place in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running musical of all time. She also points out the Longhorns around the room, all hand-picked by Walt Disney himself, as well as Walt’s favorite booth to watch the show from, stage left.

The show is probably the most sexually charged I’ve seen at a Disney park, but still light by today’s standards. Miss Lilly ventures out into the audience to comedically harass a few men.

It all culminates with the famous can can dancers, definitely able to show off their talents. They worked with original Golden Horseshoe Revue dancer Deedee Bozikis, now a stage manager for the show at Disneyland.

Despite the disappointing lack of Wally Boag-style bits, the show is a thoroguhly entertaining and fitting tribute to a gone but definitely not forgotten part of Disneyland’s history. But through Limited Time Magic, it’ll only be around for a short while, ending in less than a month.

Show times are 11:30am, 12:45pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, and 5:15pm, with the special annual passholder dinner show at 6:30pm that includes a meal, collectible boot cup, and CD of the classic Golden Horseshoe Revue show.
