‘Red Car News Boys’ and ‘Five and Dime’ to be among Buena Vista Street entertainment at Disney California Adventure

in Disney, Disneyland Resort, Entertainment

When Buena Vista Street debuts in June at Disney California Adventure, the Disneyland Resort will feature two new street entertainment acts straight out of the ’20s and ’30s.

Recent Disney casting announcements have called for musicians, dancers, and singers for two new groups, one called “Five and Dime” and the other “The Red Car News Boys.”

Buena Vista Street will also feature a store called “Five and Dime,” but the street entertainers by that name are described as “a high-energy musical group (‘Five’) fronted by a female singer (‘Dime’) with the vocal stylings of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday”. Music played by the band will include ’30s jazz standards with instrumentation including the tuba, string bass, guitar, banjo, percussion, woodwinds, tenor sax, and trumpet. Auditions for that group already took place March 10-11, 2012 at the Disneyland Resort.

Coming up on Tuesday, March 27, at 10:00 a.m., Disney is auditioning for “The Red Car News Boys,” a group not unlike Disney’s “Newsies,” which made their Broadway debut last night. The Disney California Adventure act will include a young female singer/dancer/actor who will fit the role of a “tomboy who dresses in her brother’s clothes.”

Male roles are listed as:

  • JOHNNY: portrays an older teen, the heart-throb leader of the pack, tenor
  • KIP: portrays a young teen, Johnny’s younger brother, the “exaggerator”, tenor
  • FEETS CHARMING: portrays 14-17, very outgoing, strong tapper, tenor
  • BRASS TACKS: portrays 14-17, gymnast, the “funny guy”, tenor
  • SHORTY MCGUIRE: portrays 14-17, 6’+, athletic, tenor
  • Auditions for The Red Car News Boys will be held at Debbie Reynolds Studios. More information can be found at DisneyAuditions.com.

UPDATE (4/2/12): Disney has released concept art for the above groups plus a look at the Citizens of Buena Vista Street, a new improv group similar to the Citizens of Hollywood at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida:

Buena Vista Street will officially open on June 15, when guests will be able to enjoy both of these musical acts along with the new park entrance area’s many new stores, the Carthay Circle Theatre restaurant and lounge, Red Car Trolleys, the new Walt Disney and Mickey “Storytellers” statue, and other decorative touches.
