Disneyland Resort’s Disney California Adventure theme park has entered a new phase in its $1 billion+ makeover, with its entrance area being completely redesigned to fit the park’s new early-1920s theme.

The latest change is removing the giant C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A letters that formerly marked the park’s entrance, replaced now by a long row of construction walls. But in true Disney fashion, these aren’t ordinary construction barriers:

The walls are lined with classic Disney characters from the same time period in which the park’s theme will be set. It’s the time when Walt Disney arrived in California to begin his history-making journey in filmmaking, television, and, ultimately, theme parks. Spotted are Oswald, Pete, Clara Cluck, Horace Horsecollar, and a few others. They’re all lending a hand in the refurbishment.

Visitors are reminded that the park remains open during its transformation with a few more familiar faces:

In the process, the entrance is turning from this…

The aerial artwork above is showcased on the construction walls that block the park’s former entrance. Guests are now directed off to the side to enter the park until the construction is complete. Upon completion, the new entrance will resemble that of the famous Pan-Pacific Auditorium (and will look nearly identical to the entrance of Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando).

The changes at Disney California Adventure stretch far beyond this entrance area, but this will be where Guests are familiar with the new look and feel that will continue throughout the park, complete with red car trolleys traveling through the new Buena Vista Street.

In the end, the park will be less about praising what’s currently in California, as it has done since it opened, and more about celebrating Disney’s past. Disneyland may never be completed, pushing the boundaries of themed entertainment, but Disney California Adventure will remind visitors with whom it all started, reviving the characters that current generations of Disney fans may have never even known.
