Disney says “Let the Memories Begin” with 2011 theme parks campaign projecting guest photos on Cinderella Castle, It’s a Small World

As expected, today Disney announced the newest promotion for Disney Parks called “Let the Memories Begin.” Launching in 2011, this new campaign will allow Disney guests to share their photos, videos, and stories at DisneyMemories.com. It’s Disney’s way of jumping onto the Twitter and Facebook bandwagon as they catch on to the fact that the days of scrapbooking are nearly gone, replaced by social media and online sharing.

In addition, beginning in January 2011, guests’ memories will become “larger-than-life” during a nighttime experience that will project guest photos onto Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World in Orlando and onto the façade of “it’s a small world” at Disneyland in California. In both locations, Disney PhotoPass photographers will capture guests’ images and as many as 500 photos will be used in each location every day. The show will be accompanied by a new song performed by Montego Glover and composed by Christopher McGovern.

Here’s a video Disney released of a recent test of the Cinderella Castle projections in action:

There has been no word yet as to how Disney will select which photos to be shown on Cinderella Castle each day nor whether the new projection system will be used for future shows – though I have to imagine it will. At Christmas time, “it’s a small world” in California puts on a projection-based holiday show that stops guests in the streets, stunned at the vibrant images. Let’s hope a similar show eventually comes to Orlando (perhaps minus the guest photos). I for one am not particularly looking forward to potentially seeing my already-big head inflated even larger on the castle, but that’s just me.
