Whether or not you’re a fan of the recent Hollywood trend to offer movies in 3D, you can’t avoid it. Now Disney has announced that they will be shooting the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film in 3D to be displayed in theaters everywhere in Disney Digital 3D when it’s released in May 2011.

Even if you aren’t a 3D fan, you’ll be happy to note the detail that Disney is indeed shooting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides using 3D cameras rather than converting the film to 3D in post-production, as has recently been done for the live-action footage in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. With Disney’s recent announcement that the film’s budget will be scaled back from the previous two in the series, shooting in 3D can only mean that even less money will be available for the rest of the shoot.

So what kind of “cheap 3D tricks” can we expect from On Stranger Tides? Well, imagine what the above-pictured scene from Dead Man’s Chest would have looked like in 3D, with a flailing Captain Jack running right at you. Now picture cannon balls flying toward the camera. I imagine it will be something like that, though I hope the new film will feature less slapstick comedy in favor of more adventure like the original.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is scheduled to begin shooting in Hawaii in June.
