New Disneyland Tram Doors – Added Safety Or Just A Pain?

Disneyland Tram Doors

Recently, some of the parking lot trams at Disneyland have had doors installed, presumably for safety reasons. Before this addition, the sides of the trams were open to the air. Last Saturday was my first opportunity to ride in one of the updated trams.

I’ll be the first to admit I wouldn’t say I like change, so it is no surprise that my initial reaction is to hate these doors.  But after riding in the door-equipped tram, I now have a real reason for not liking the doors.

I was with my brother, his wife, and my nephew, and, naturally, they had brought along quite a bit of baby stuff, including a stroller and diaper bag.  We also had jackets and other items such as water bottles.  When we arrived at the tram, we collapsed the stroller and then had a heck of a time getting the broken-down stroller onto the tram.  With our arms full of baby stuff plus the baby, we found getting the doors open and getting on the tram to be a tough operation.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t these the only doors on ride vehicles in all of the Disneyland Resort that Guests have to open themselves?  I expected them to open up automatically and shut the same way, but they don’t.

The doors are also hinged in such a way that they want to stay shut.  So you actually have to keep your hand on the door to keep it open.  As you can imagine, this makes boarding with a child or stroller that much more difficult.

My other complaint is that the tram accommodates fewer people with the addition of these new doors.  Before, when you saw an empty spot on an almost full row, it would be easy to jump on and cram in.  For some reason, the door makes the row seem private, making an additional person hopping onto the row uncomfortable but almost rude.

That’s just my two cents.  With all of Disney’s recent accidents, I’m sure this safety precaution makes sense.  But it’s not the way things have always been.

What do you think of the new doors on the Disneyland tram?
